Alternative Medicine Depression Archives

I am taking medicine now for my anxiety and depression. Going through a family crisis and I have made myself ill over it. Migraines, naseua, vomitting, can't sleep, and I constantly worry. I don't like having to rely on medicine. Does anyone have any alternative methods that may help me?

Thank you so much!

Yes, I also recommend acupuncture and herbs, because that's what I do and I know it can help you. There's Chinese herbal formula for your symptoms possibly your acupuncturist and/or herbalist can give to you. This is not an uncommon illness to treat in Chinese Medicine. Getting the treatment now and taking the herbs for your physical problems, while you are working on resolving your emotional issues. We know exercise, yoga and meditation may also help. Most importantly, eliminate your worry and negative thinking ASAP, perhaps by reading some good, encouraging and self-help books, and talk to people who may help. Pray to God. Turn your thoughts around because your mind is absolutely affecting your body in the present. Take a hot bath and drink some warm relaxing herbal tea(non-caffeine) before you go to bed. Relax in calming music. Stop thinking the worse especially during bed time.

Hope those alternative methods help. May your crisis be over soon. Wish you good luck on getting rid of your headache!

A friend of mine was telling me that there is some breakthrough in health using nanotechnology. Something called biophotons. He gave me a company name of huashen but i can't find anything on the web. I am looking for non pill method of combating depression. Not exactly alternative medicine but something else with scientific backing.

I did a lot of research on the web and spoke with a few medical doctors that began using Huashen products to help their patients. The products are extremely hard to find in the US, so I had to order them from abroad. The results were great, after 2 months of use I began to notice positive changes in my mood, my motivation level increased and the most important factor of all is the ability to enjoy life.

Anyone ever tried this alternative medicine?

L-Tryptophan! I think it's great for anxiety and depression. It's the only thing I've ever tried that has a emmediate effect. I just thought I would pass this on. Better hurry and get yours before the Government finds out that it really works. Pharmaceutical companies will kill to get this off the market. Because it's natural and you can't patent it. I'm on a 1000 mg twice a day. Hope this helps someone.

supplemental tryptophan is an important dietary supplement in spite of what some responders have said. I know it works for sleeplessness but I don't know about depression but it could work I guess. It was already banned by the FDA and now it has been OK'ed for sale. It seemed that tryptophan caused illness (I don't remember what) but it was not tryptophan but a contaminant that was the culprit. Be sure of your product source so that the contaminant is not in the product. And who eats turkey every day? And as you age the body produces less tryptophan which may be the reason older people don't sleep so good.

I've been suffering for a while with depression due to the loss of my father. I'm on medications but it doesn't seem to be working. I've been to a lot of alternative medical sites like wiccan sites but I don't want to pay for a stupid spell and get scammed out of money. I'm not against wiccan but I'm looking for actual products that work. Any ideas?

depression?

does anyone know of any alternative medicine, method to treat depression besides prescription meds?

Herbal Remedies

There are a variety of herbal therapies believed to treat many illnesses. For depression, St. John's wort and ginkgo biloba are the most talked about.

St. John's wort has been used for medical purposes in other parts of the world for thousands of years, despite the fact that it hasn't been scientifically proven to treat moderate to severe depression.
Ginkgo biloba is thought to improve memory and other intellectual functions, although the evidence is conflictual.
Any herbal supplement requires caution and should be taken only after consulting your doctor. Your doctor can help you weigh the risks and potential benefits so you can make an informed decision.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method of healing that prevents and cures specific diseases and conditions by sticking very fine, solid needles into specific points on the body. It stimulates the body's ability to resist or overcome illnesses and conditions by correcting imbalances. Acupuncture also prompts the body to produce chemicals that decrease or eliminate painful sensations.

Acupuncture is most effective at treating long-term pain, such as headaches, menstrual cramps, and low back, neck, or muscle pain. It can also be used to treat arthritis, facial pain, pain from shingles, spastic colon, colitis, obesity, and addictions to nicotine or other drugs.

Reflexology

This is a technique in which a therapist applies pressure to specific points on the hands and feet. Reflexologists believe that the body has the capacity to heal itself. There are nerves in the hands and feet related to various parts of the body, and by manipulating these points through reflexology, it is thought that the healing process is stimulated.

Exercise

Different forms of exercise can lower your stress, relax you, reduce depression and increase your energy, balance, and flexibility. In general, exercise is a safe, effective, and easy way to improve your well-being; but, always check with your doctor before starting a new program.

Meditation

Meditation is sometimes described as an altered state of consciousness. It is a form of relaxation that, unlike sleep, is entered into purposely. Meditation is usually practiced regularly -- for at least 10 minutes each day. While the body is at rest, the mind is cleared by focusing on one thought, sometimes a word, phrase, or particular scenery.

Massage

Massage uses touch to provide relaxation. While there are variations of massage, they all work under the general principle of the connection between body and mind -- that when the body is relaxed and at ease, the mind is promoting better health, less depression and overall well-being. Some examples of massage include shiatsu, neuromuscular therapy, spinal release therapy, Swedish, and the sports variation.

Guided Imagery and Relaxation

Guided imagery is a form of focused relaxation that helps create harmony between the mind and body. Guided imagery coaches you in creating calm, peaceful images in your mind -- a "mental escape" for therapeutic purposes. It can be a powerful psychological strategy to enhance a person's coping skills. It can help people cope with -- and possibly overcome -- stress, anger, pain, depression and insomnia with or without associated physical illness.

My stepmom is depressed and does not seem to tolerate medicine very well. She develops all sorts of side effects. She is currently on zoloft and zanax. She has developed tremors, is nauseous and is not sleeping. Plus, her stomach really hurts now. She has tried 3 different medicines and is getting more depressed.

Funny this question came up. I was researching that same question. I found some good info HERE.

I have a diagnosis of depression and am on anti-depressants etc. I'm now curious about trying alternative remedies to see if it helps my mood, like ginseng and lemon balm capsules (Obviously I wouldnt take anything that can cause problems with my prescribed meds).

Wondering if others have found alternative medicines has helped them at all?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Yes there are many natural substances that help with depression. Exercise and vitamins such as a multi-vitamin, B complex, C, potassium, calcium, and magnesium will help with an anti-depressant.

However if you try St. John's Wort or SAMe it is usually advised to not take an anti-depressant at that time. That is also the case with Mood-care.
