I’ve heard about St. John’s Wort and 5-HTP as an alternative medicine for depression, are they good?
And what are the downside of using them? Are those 2 enough to help me control my episodes?
5-HTP is great and without side effects if you follow the appropriate dosage for your size/age. Take it at night for restful sleep. The only side effect is that if you take a double dose, for example, you will sleep heavier and may not wake up in time. I had a dramatic change in my chronic fatigue symptoms when I tried a thing called olive-leaf extract. It is the bitter substance that is removed from olives during the curing process. It relieved my fatigue symptoms so much that I couldn't take it after 5pm and I was not jittery or anything, it just made me very energetic and alert (I learned about this supplement from anti-yeast diet links way back when). Try also eating frsh ocean fish. Find a good fresh seafood market and try some fresh tuna or other oily fish and of course-read about them first. Its all there at your fingertips-you can fix yourself with food--but not to discourage you from seeking medical advice/treatment either-just learn to take care of yourself.
The first answerer to your question directs you to the home remedy site. I checked out the depression link quickly and found a site for amoryn. It seems to be a sensible approach for a safe over-the-counter supplement. I have taken bcomplex/ and large dose of C (3) 500mg tablets to alleviate stress. Calcium/magnesium/zinc has been very important for proper mental function. selenium has worked wonders when added to my diet but that's one of those you have to follow dosages very carefully.
Eat a balanced diet and start reading about foodstuffs in the mediterranean diet, anti-yeast diets, brain foods and cardiovascular foods and dietary fiber, tropical foods like coconut and pineapple (though both are a pain to prepare-but worth it) and consume lemons and limes without the aid of sugar (bad for your teeth.). They are a great source of C and they alkalize your body and I think aid in hydration to all your body tissues, moreso than just drinking water. Read about these foods and you will start to see a connection and that good physical and mental health are only rocket science if you ignore the importance and keep relying on the quick pick-me-ups that are enslaving vices for others.
Best wishes.

With dietary supplements such as St John’s Wort there are a few problems:
No clinical research. The actual effects and side effects are not well known.
No standardized dose. There is no telling how much is in a tablet and how much you need.
You are much better off seeing a Doctor, getting a diagnosis, and getting a prescription that accurately treats your condition.

With depression i would talk with a doctor, there are some great drugs out there. But if you are not into that kind of thing, still talk with a doc before you start taking any supplement. If you do decide to take these supplements look up serotonin syndrome, because taking both at the same time may give you too much serotonin. St. Johns wort blocks serotonin from being absorbed so your brain has more, and 5-htp creates more in the brain, may not be a good idea too take both. Start with the wort and wait about a month and a half and see if you are getting better. Ya sounds like a long time but it takes time too work, it could start working sooner. 5-htp would be the second choice. But before you start taking that make sure the wort is out of your system. BUT if you go see a doc you will prob see relief much faster. TALK TO A DOC BEFORE TRYING ANY OF THIS!!!!!!!!! Stay strong… MUCH LOVE
